This is such a charming hotel! I would definitely stay here again! As others mentioned, there is no elevator or A/C but it’s an older historic building so that’s understandable We actually enjoyed being able to open the windows and let in the fresh Berkeley air Parking was $15 overnight which is reasonable for the area

If you want a cookie cutter room you should stay at the Hyatt in Emeryville, if you want a cute, European-style hotel close to campus this is the perfect place!

I traveled 2250 miles from Pittsburgh to help my son move out of the nearby dorms, only to arrive as agreed in my reservation to find that the doors were chained shut They took my reservation for a 2-night stay, but there was no access to the hotel and nobody would answer a phone call or email I have never had this experience at a hotel before

I was pretty amazed

The building is old and dilapidated It’s dark and depressing inside, feels like my Grandmother’s attic I don’t like this place, it feels unhealthy and someone would certainly do better renting either a modern room that’s has simple, common amenities OR, if one prefers something less corporate (as I assume some readers of this review might be hoping for), there are many other options close by which will certainly be more enjoyable

Additionally, if you own a car, this place isn’t for you The parking lot is a joke, too tight, too small, trying to squeeze every space they can make in order to maximize revenue by charging ridiculously high prices for parking There is a kitchen downstairs but please be aware that it’s old, not up to modern standards and is overall a health risk

I’m writing this review for my cousin He was treated very badly! I don’t think this is a word but that’s the point to what happen last night My cousin said he came in around check in to check in on the room

(Pablo) said that the room wasn’t ready So my cousin went and chilled in the parking lot Than went back inside and had Pablo ran his card but the moral of the story is he didn’t get a room Make sure you don’t deal with Pablo If you were having a bad day please don’t take it out others

After a long day of travel, we arrived at the hotel very late at night via the complimentary airport shuttle bus We were warmly greeted by the front desk clerk who asked us to make ourselves comfortable as she helped another family secure a room for the night Apparently, the family’s reservation at another hotel had fallen through, but she was able to help

She was kind and mindful of the late hour and serviced everyone as quickly and efficiently as possible In no time, we were all checked in, given room keys and on our way to enjoying our comfortable, spacious and clean rooms So glad we chose Comfort Inn & Suites

Good hotel The front desk staff was hilarious The rooms were clean and very nice

The TV had soccer so I could watch the World Cup games One of the elevators needs a little maintenance It’s a bit old, but felt safe The area is a little sketchy and the hotel is hard to find from the street That is my only gripe with it Parking and WiFi was included which is great!

Great place to stay in Oakland on a budget Cassandra is really nice and the proximity to the BART is really nice Not in a great neighborhood though, so wouldn’t recommend going out at night

Felt safe in the house though and the other guests were all friendly Best part is that Cassandra bakes some times! Today I had peach cobbler tacos 🙂

Awesomebrix

This hotel is great The rooms are nice, clean, and comfortable The staff are very friendly and very helpful

The breakfast is a full, hot breakfast as of now (July 2022) and it has plenty of options The only downside is how far away from San Francisco it is, but it is within walking distance from a BART train stop that can take you all the way into the city I overall highly recommend this hotel

Recently we had a wedding at Lake Chabot and we stayed here along with our out-of-town guests (6 rooms total) We were extremely pleased with everything Rooms were great, breakfast was great (we loved the pancake maker), and we had one RV in the group and they were permitted to park near the parking lot exit with no issue, which was awesome

(There is a parking garage underneath the hotel and maybe ten spaces next to the building, so parking could get tight if they were really busy, but we had no issues) One evening our group wanted to gather in the breakfast area just to sit and be social, and the staff had no problem with us using the space, and moving a few tables and chairs (which we put back when finished) They even turned on extra lights for us Overall, we were all very satisfied with our stay Fresh popcorn daily and warm cookies one evening were a bonus! The pool was open and clean and used by a few in our group Reserving the rooms initially was a headache because the manager does not return phone calls (my only gripe) However, the front desk gal was able to take care of everything for the booking, including the group rates and individual confirmation numbers for each room Easy peasy Thoroughly satisfied customer!

My wife and I had a wonderful stay Helen was wonderful We drove in from Los Angeles for a wedding at Tilden Park

The Brown Shingle was a perfect location The room was cozy and comfortable There was a breathtaking view of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge from our room and from the huge deck below We would definitely recommend it

Madrona Bark

The very good: Brown Shingle’s porch and rooms have outstanding views of the East Bay, even more amazing at sunset Also the location is outstanding for its close proximity to UC Berkeley and the north Berkeley “gourmet ghetto”The ok: rooms are clean and having a private bathroom is especially nice

There is no lock on the door, however The owner is nice and competent She may offer you free parking permits if you need them during your stay, but you should ask her if she forgetsThe bad: The common space in the first floor of the house simply does not feel professional at all It feels like you’re in the personal home of someone with a hoarding problem– including the piles of stuff in the off-limits dining room visible through its glass doors, the piles of things along the walls, and the garbage in the yard outside the front door Though the private rooms are clean, the basket in the bathroom seemed to have decades-old castaways where there should have been soap and shampoo The common spaces also smell like dog, and faintly like pee I felt very uncomfortable spending any time in the common spaces of the house Finally there is no “breakfast” with this bed and breakfast, though there is coffee, bread, and fruit spread set out on a little island at the top of the stairs on the second floorOverall, I recommend this as a place to stay after dinner for enjoying the sunset, and as a place to sleep, but not as a place to spend time during the day

Funky place Totally fit into my preconceived first visit to Berkeley and that crazy 60’s and 70’s stuff that can only happen in a University town

It was close to our Jimmy Buffett concert at The Hearst Greek Theatre 15 minutes walking straight down to the concert venue and the great stadium, home of the Cal Bears Helen knows Berkeley and it’s famous architecture, history and the many eateries of the downtown Pick her brain on the big wooden porch that looks out at the Bay (And if you can choose the middle room upstairs for sleep time that same view is 10 feet clearer Wow)I also would be remiss in mentioning we met some nice folks in B-Ville Along with Parrotheads from near and far we met a tavern owner who invited us back for salsa and Marg’s As we always get in some kind of adventure I’ll particularly single out our friend at Executive Cab who tracked down my lost wallet that fell from my pocket ( In someone elses car) That whole group of Independent drivers made phone calls to each other and long distant calls to my Canadian number to get it back to me two days later Kudos Now Helen can really recommend the cabs for a safe return back to the Brown Shingle after a night on the townSome friends of ours were staying in San Francisco at an Air B n B Not so nice an area, not so great a price We saw it and sped away across the Bay Twice our buds Barted over to Berkeley and were not only impressed that the trip only took about 40 minutes and a few bucks but also that Berkeley has such a good vibe and seemed to them much cleaner and fresher than their particular area of the big Citt In otherwards The Brown Shingle is a great option to get into SF for the neat things the great city has to offer then escape back to the solitude on the east side of the BaySo again Helen, thanks for our first ever B and B experience The pictures posted on the site really do give indication on just how magnificent the view really is by misty morning, Golden Gate Sunset or twinkling Lights on the harbour of the City By the Bay (Journey)

Great spot for grad students and faculty A place to take visitors and special guests and also a great option for lunch during a busy week on campusHidden away in the trees behind Haas School of Business makes the venue feel more private

A good variety of menu options for hot lunch, breakfast or dinner Dining ambiance spans from cafeteria style to white table cloth, you choose! Outdoor and indoor seating as wellFabulous service during dinner from our waiter Marco Wine was poured generously and New York steak cooked to perfection Nice private dining spot with only a few full tables Both the wine list and dining options fit on one page, but there’s enough variety to come back to a few times to try different entreesI will back with family during graduation week I’ve had really great experiences here dining that I’ve decided to try the hotel as well Till then!
