I’ve been a valued guest of the Holiday Inn Express, in Berkeley, CA for over the past 10 years plus Every time I come to stay I feel like I’m visiting with family and friends Always a smiling welcoming person to greet me at the front desk

Always going out their way to make my stay a great experience Gotta love the wonderful breakfast buffet that comes with your stay I highly recommend you and your family and friends stay here on your next trip to Berkeley Conveniently located near local attractions

As an Elite Member, I know I am entitled to a modicum of perks I appreciated that this hotel was located within walking distance of where I needed to be and that the grounds were beautifully maintained by a gardener who obviously loved their work However, I was greeted by a woman at reception who I hope had no idea that she came off as rude, cheap and unsupportive as a representative of this hotel

She would not give me water and their vending machine was broken She said NO, they do nothing special for Elite members I had a nice quiet room except for the expected street noise that was probably unavoidable It’s not a nice neighborhood and walking even one block is not recommended, unless you want to dodge street people accosting you and their public pooping areas along the sidewalk/walls of abandoned storefronts There are wonderful eateries and groceries like Himalayan Flavors and Three Stone Hearth Too bad Berkeley can’t get a handle on their homeless/addict population after all these years I feel compassion for everyone and for the situation My room was nice and clean and the morning breakfast man was welcoming and gave me water If had been my welcoming committee, I may have given this hotel stay 4 stars I just want to be treated properly, as I come to expect from a Holiday Inn hotel The woman was incorrect in her role, attitude and communication with me Hope this all gets corrected because I may need to stay there again

Great location Beautiful setting Staff is SO nice that it’s almost impossible to say enough about how great they are!Only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because some of the fixtures and furnishings are looking a bit down at the heels and that’s not quite appropriate

Time for a bit of a refreshMy bathroom shower was giant and fancy but I couldn’t get the water quite hit enough no matter how much I fiddled with that Grohe temp setting

Juliana Schroeder

I had a truly horrific experience The room cost more than $800 and there was just one issue after another The worst was that there was a 3 hour wait to get a crib, which was set up so that it folded halfway through the night and almost killed my baby

I was calling customer service for hours and when they finally answered they said “oh sorry, we were busy” Busy at midnight? That’s a ridiculous lie, they just didn’t have any manning the desk Later on, the woman at the front desk had no idea about any of the events going on My husband left his phone at the pool and then they refused to let him get it back after the pool area closed He literally didn’t have a phone all night long until I went in and negotiated with them in the morning Then housekeeping came by at 7 am and knocked loudly on the door for like 5 minutes The wake up call we definitely didn’t need I can say without a doubt that this was one of the worst hotels I’ve been to in my life

Kerry Wilson

We really enjoyed our escape to the gorgeous Claremont The building has been beautifully updated with modern decor and features, yet it maintains historic elements and charm The hotel’s location on the edge of Berkeley allows for a quiet getaway, yet it’s a short, safe walk from the shops and restaurants of College Avenue

Highly recommend upgrading to a room with a view of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge

It’s a nice and solid motor lodge, not to be confused to a hotel It is also better than a motel too This place is clean and a safe place to stay

Parking is onsite Good restaurants within walking distance This place does not “nickel and dime” you to death like hotels further inside the city If you are on a budget and need a place to stay overnight or two, this place is it Overall, it is a great place stay and I recommend it to everyone

Amanda Stein

We stayed here for one night passing through San Francisco Free secure parking is provided, however it can be limited in the overnight hours If possible I’d recommend getting back to your room earlier to secure your parking spot! The place is noted to be older, but it’s well kept and clean! If you’re looking for view of the city, it most definitely isn’t guaranteed here as you may have a view of siding of another building

We didn’t mind as we were out exploring most of the day anywayWe would recommend staying here again if you need a clean comfortable place to rest overnight!

Ted Moret

Clean, perfect location, amazing and kind staff, nice safe parking garage, and priced fair We were able to walk everywhere and not move our car We made a huge mistake in our booking dates and the manager went over and beyond to correct it for us; he showed the utmost kindness

First time in San Francisco for this Florida family; we loved the city and especially Coventry Inn April 23-25 2022

It felt nice to be in a clean, fresh room! I didn’t see one spec of dirty Love the scent of the shampoo and the bar of soap! Yum! The only reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the tv didn’t have any channels

they did send someone up to help but he couldn’t get it working then they called my room and asked if we want to switch rooms… I had 5 kids with me and we all had just brought our stuff in and got off the road from a 4-5 hour drive didn’t want to move especially after feeling how comfy the beds were 😅 maybe y’all should have housekeepers double check the TVs are working properly before checking in guests I would expect the TV to work if y’all gonna charge me $52142 for 2 nights Oh there isn’t a microwave either 🙁 they have a fridge but no microwave in room to warm up food :/They have very little parking space around the hotel but they do have an overflow parking garage right next to the hotel But other than that everything was great Especially the customer service! Sorry for the other guests that had to hear me and the kids 😅Thank y’all so much though ❤️‍🔥 definitely would recommend others to stay here

Carlotta Fernbush

We stayed here for 2 weeks The rooms are very clean & so quiet, we got great sleep here every night All the hotel associates were just great

All smiles & so pleasant all the time Darlynn (spelling?) Is absolutely amazing! She made us feel so welcome, not just at check-in, but every day we were there We’ve stayed at hotels all over the country for work & she is probably my favoriteThe hotel is in a great location, so close to SF & Oakland for sightseeing My only negative feed back would be the extreme lack of parking & no microwaves in the rooms Otherwise, we had a great stay

Aryan Sood

Great hotel for stay Spacious rooms, 24/7 accessible gym, modern look, and very good staff service The location is also great with shops on the same street and the AMC Bay Street is a mere 5 minute walk from the hotel

The breakfast leaves some things to be desired, and isn’t as expansive as most other continental breakfast One major issue was that the eyehole on the room’s door was reversed and completely unsafe since anyone could see everything in the room from outside, but the guest services immediately sent someone to fix the issue

Truly a magical place First time in a hostel and I was greeted with the kindest staff and amazing fellow travelers! The common area is perfect for cooking, socializing, pool, and they even have instruments for people to jam out Comfy couches to kick back and read

The rooms are clean and the location is just superb if you like being in a busy part of the city Walking distance from great restaurants, attractions, cafes, bars, etc The pub crawl was also super fun! Cannot wait to return <3

Belle La Rouge

I really liked my stay here The location is great (right next to China Town, with a lot of fun shops and restaurants) The beds and bath rooms seemed clean

The common area is spacious and has a great vibe The staff is friendly and helpful They also have some social gatherings every night so it’s easy to get to know people The mood is great as the guests are actually travellers and not homeless people (when I was in green tortoise in Seattle it seemed like a lot of the guests stayed there because they couldn’t afford to live somewhere else)The only thing is that we booked a tour to Muir woods with the hostel in order to get 10$ or so in discount But when we arrived to Muir woods we had to pay the entrance fee (15$) in addition It might not be the best to book through the hostel I guess the upside is that you get picked up right in front of the hostel

Rachael Sperling

We only stayed one night at the Green Tortoise and I wish we’d had more time to attend some of the social events The Indian food + piano bar + comedy show sounded so fun! My partner and I stayed in a private room: it was clean and a good enough size for two The shared bathrooms were clean and I never had to wait to use the restroom or shower

The free breakfast was a nice treat I recommend this spot for anyone on a budget or looking to meet other travelers!

Wow! This is a really great hotel Small property with spacious beautiful and clean rooms The bed was maybe the most comfortable bed my wife and I have ever had the pleasure to sleep upon

The level of hospitality is very high here and so is the attention to detail The welcoming goody bag, with excellent wine and snacks and the morning breakfast are excellent amenities We stayed in a View King room which had a small balcony with unobstructed views of the San Francisco skyline and bay (picture is from our private balcony) Really no worries with booking this hotel, we will be repeat guests next time we choose to visit the Bay Area

Eddie Melvin

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a boutique hotel, not part of an upscale chain I was pleasantly surprised Unlike a large upscale hotel chain, they delivered

Morning breakfast was on-time The room was comfortable We booked the largest suite with the large private balcony, and we liked it a lot Sausolito is not within walking or short biking distance There is no direct ferry connection either This helps to keep the very small business district relatively quiet

Big Mike

Been there a few times I’m kind of local only live a couple hours away Love to stay there when visiting angel island

Can’t beat enjoying a glass of wine on the deck looking at the night lights of sf and the bay Short walk to the ferry Great staff did however miss the wine and cheese hour this trip Loved the breakfast Now the negatives Which aren’t deal breakers I need and got a Ada room Sadly I have a lot of stuff and the end tables just don’t do it Need to be bigger, by the time you place a cpap machine lay out your meds ect I’m placing things on my wheelchair 2nd thing beds are to soft You sink down 4 inches Need to be a little firmer I would have loved the bed being a foot higher with my bum legs But split the difference 6 inches would have been helpful Something for them to consider Like I said not a deal breaker When I’m back that way I will be checking in again

Let me FIRST CLARIFY that this is NOT a HOTEL It is a MOTEL where the doors face out toward the open air and it is Located on a very busy street Space is limited in the front lobby but it is enough handle business and keep it moving

There is NO continental breakfast with eggs, cereals and such but there are plenty of places to get out and explore If you are looking for a clean, inexpensive place to lay your head with basic accommodations, THIS IS FOR YOU! It has free parking, a coffee maker, a microwave, a mini fridge, and in a great location Did I say FREE PARKING? Hubby and I researched for HOURS before we decided on this spot We could’ve used our 3/4 star hotel points but WHY?? The price point is great and has all of our needs met with FREE PARKING! We aren’t high maintenance but we are particular on what we need, so if you are expecting more of a hotel style with a parking garage, valet service, 24 hr front desk service for a wake up call, or maid service knocking on your door to fluff your pillow and change your sheets, don’t bother staying here and giving poor reviews because of your high expectations Seriously This really is a hidden gem

John Goodman

This is one of the many older motels along this stretch of Lombard Street Motel means no lobby with rooms facing a parking lot The Seaside appears to be one of the nicer motels

The room was very comfortable, well appointed, with quality bedding Nice bathroom with quality updated design The staff was very friendly and helpful A great bargain for the costly SF market

Ariane Eye

I choose to come here because of the free parking I had some valuables in the car and didn’t want to risk anything with street parking I saw this on expedia for like $150 & it was worth the cost

The room was great Perfect for an overnight stay Very clean Close to park to walk my service dog Close to good restaurants and felt like I was in the city without feeling too busy Staff was friendly

Stayed for 3 days and 3 nights about a week ago and it was a wonderful experience They accommodated our unexpected early arrival to the city, which I appreciated so much The room was clean, the parking was super convenient, and the attendant that helped us check in was very friendly

This is definitely my first choice in hotels the next time my family stays in SFAnother plus, the hotel was very close to touristy spots, but far enough away where there wasn’t a lot of traffic

Joan Cramer

Perfect place for an economical stay in a central location The staff were friendly and super accommodating, especially by letting us park at the hotel earlier than check-in so we could attend the Giants game The room seemed recently updated, had great water pressure and comfie beds

Rooms are “motel” style, with no common hallway, doors lead directly outside but are above the ground floor parking area The neighborhood seemed very safe and had lots of restaurants nearby We would stay here again

Victoria Hudak

Great no frills hotel with quality service Got a great room for the price we paid, and the rooms were especially clean Loved that we were able to park, and in a convenient location by some great restaurants

My boyfriends car pulled in with a flat tire, and hotel staff were kind enough to help us change the spare right as we were checking out They really went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable for our weekend trip Would definitely recommend this place if you need a safe place to stay in SF with parking I’d definitely consider returning for my next SF excursion

This is such a charming hotel! I would definitely stay here again! As others mentioned, there is no elevator or A/C but it’s an older historic building so that’s understandable We actually enjoyed being able to open the windows and let in the fresh Berkeley air Parking was $15 overnight which is reasonable for the area

If you want a cookie cutter room you should stay at the Hyatt in Emeryville, if you want a cute, European-style hotel close to campus this is the perfect place!

Mark Chrystal

I traveled 2250 miles from Pittsburgh to help my son move out of the nearby dorms, only to arrive as agreed in my reservation to find that the doors were chained shut They took my reservation for a 2-night stay, but there was no access to the hotel and nobody would answer a phone call or email I have never had this experience at a hotel before

I was pretty amazed

Menu Mystique

The building is old and dilapidated It’s dark and depressing inside, feels like my Grandmother’s attic I don’t like this place, it feels unhealthy and someone would certainly do better renting either a modern room that’s has simple, common amenities OR, if one prefers something less corporate (as I assume some readers of this review might be hoping for), there are many other options close by which will certainly be more enjoyable

Additionally, if you own a car, this place isn’t for you The parking lot is a joke, too tight, too small, trying to squeeze every space they can make in order to maximize revenue by charging ridiculously high prices for parking There is a kitchen downstairs but please be aware that it’s old, not up to modern standards and is overall a health risk

Stayed for 4 nights with family – 2 rooms You won’t find a better price and friendlier front desk staff The rooms are tiny – don’t expect more than to have a place to sleep

The coffee machine is awesome and there’s actually plenty of bathrooms and showers between the 2 floors Everything was well supplied and clean We spent a lot of time at pier 39, which was just a short walk Oh and Try the Italian restaurant next door as well Very good food

David Poole

Newly renovated, unlike some Garden Inns, this hotel has truly upscale accommodations I had a splendid stay until I went down for breakfast, finding a breakfast policy with absolutely no continental option for your $10 credit I had unknowingly walked in and acknowledged my credit at check in, declining the points add back offered

This was an annual Honors stay offered for Diamond members, the only redemption to this story If I had paid for this room I would be much more feisty 😇

David Bunjac

Very good hotel for the price point and very conveniently located in Emeryville close to the Bay Bridge and Oakland Inside, it’s quiet, clean and most importantly, the beds are very comfortable! The neighborhood is safe with good shopping very close The downside is the property is aging and is showing signs of wear

Good maintenance is trying to keep up, but there are still flaws that will only be corrected with a major rehab No safe in the room and aging furniture Water pressure so-so $20 breakfast buffet that was not much better than what you’d see for free in other properties, so the dining room was empty at breakfast time with hot trays full standing for who knows how long But despite those problems, I would stay again It’s a good base to explore SF or the rest of the Bay Area and not too expensive That’s why I give four stars

Kristina Boler

The location is very convenient and the hotel is nice in appearance The staff was friendly and helpful and the rooms were cleanPlease note that you do have to pay $20 a day for parking which though I did notice that when we made the reservation, I thought that was a lot just to park

In my opinion, it should be free for choosing to stay there The breakfast was good but again, over priced They don’t have a pool but I was okay because I looked forward to the hot tub which was sadly closed when we were staying there So lots of plus’s and minuses but the location was worth it for our travel plans

Interesting and neat place to stay The room we had in the Annex building was very spacious and comfortable The bed was supportive and comfortable to sleep on

Everything was clean It was handy to have the little kitchen area with sink and a microwave Would have been nice to have paper towels for the dining tableThe building itself was quiet Train and shouting from an upset individual in the early hours not uncommon in this area Overall, if you find yourself in this area needing a place to stay, this is a pretty good choice

This place was so good the one tiny bad thing stood out:An insufficient number of shower curtain magnets to hold the bottom seam tight against the tub wall resulted in the clingy wet ghost phenomenon that nobody likes, especially in a public placeThe hotel is so good that you and I just shared moment about a super-mild inconvenienceCheck in was seamless, room exceeded expectations

It was quiet and clean and comfy and I would absolutely recommend it

I was looking for a place to celebrate my wife’s birthday and came across this hotel This place is much nicer in person We got carriage house 103

it was really clean and had a little kitchen, a really nice bathroom with huge glass doors We also had a private patioI do I agree it’s a little tricky finding the parking lot and hotel since everything is in contact less, but the lady from the hotel was very helpful, texting me all the instructions The railway across can be a bit loud at night Other than that, it’s a great place to stay close to restaurants and freeways Prices are very reasonable, being that it’s in san Francisco We definitely would return and stay longer

Wonderful on every level A kind and caring staff Great bar in the lobby

Cozy rooms and great prices The staff really makes the experience the best They really want to make sure you are having a good time, not just in the hotel but when you leave as well They always welcome you back and wish you a good day or night when you go out Will definitely come back

The hotel is very pretty and has held onto the original charm The staff is also very kind! The room was furnished nicely but was on the smaller side The door that connected our room with the one next door had a 2+ inch gap at the bottom and you could see into the next room, we stuffed a blanket under it to keep out the excess noise and from the people staying in the room from seeing into our space

The walls are thin so both our neighbors chatting sounded like people were in the room with us The bathroom was tiny and not practical at all There was no bathroom counter space as the bowl sink took up almost all the room and there were no hooks anywhere to hang your towels so we ended up grabbing hangers from the closet and hanging our towels from the shower curtain, otherwise our towels never dried on the shelf provided The TV barely worked and was glitchy every time we tried to use it The neighborhood is super convenient with delicious restaurants and coffee all around but it’s not super safe and very dirty If your looking for a quiet/private stay and for your room to be more then just aesthetically pleasing then this is not the place for you The price is too high for what is offered here I wouldn’t stay again unless it was a very short stay and/or the price was decreased by at least 1/3

It was great! Easy location and my car stayed safe parked in there The front desk guy was very nice and personable The room was clean, modern and very nice

We paid after taxes about 200 a night and free parking!! Totally worth it The outside seemed a little sketchy at first but don’t let the cover fool you it was a very nice place and we would stay there again

Great location and good room, maybe a little bit outdated but worth the amount of money you paid All the staff was friendly and very comfortingHouse keeping was super friendly and on par just great how she really asked if we needed anything from shower amenities to coffee even though we only asked for new towels cause we didn’t need any other house keeping

Not sure why this is only a 1 star hotel, but I would definitely stay here again! This place is perfect for a budget/solo traveler (me) I felt safe and it looked like there was ample FREE parking It’s also in a great location, I was able to walk to fisherman’s warf and pier 39

The room was clean and the check in/out process was smooth The only real downside was that it got loud at night Overall, I am happy with my experience

Stayed here for two nights and felt the hotel was adequate at best Clearly an older hotel that could use a renovation Checked in and the first room we got reeked of weed

Changed rooms and new room had no soap which we then had to call down to the front desk for On the day we checked out the a/c broke and room temp got up to 77 degrees We also brought out dog and was charged a $100 pet fee, which is fine, but then we come to find out when we check out that we were supposed to get a pet bed and dog bowl Would have been nice if they offered that when we arrived and not when we left Overall, a pretty poor stay and will not be staying here again
