After a week of disappointment in our Airbnb, we were ecstatic to return to our “go-to”, Holiday Inn Express for the last leg of vacation! Holiday Inn Express simply does it better than the others! Every single time we’ve stayed with them it’s been fantastic! The rooms are very clean & very spacious The beds & bedding are extremely clean & oh so comfortable (I even ordered their pillows from their website because I love them that much!) The breakfast is always hot & delicious, the pool is always fantastic & they are very pet friendly! Just because you’re traveling with your pet doesn’t mean you should have to stay in a “lesser” version of the rooms & Holiday Inn Express understands this & offers fantastic rooms for ALL of their patrons! Also, their pet fee is completely reasonable, unlike their Airbnb competitors If only there were a Holiday Inn Express in every corner of the world, we’d never stay anywhere else! We love it here! It’s “home away from home!”

I have been staying at this hotel location since we started visiting family 35 years ago I was excited to be bringing my own children to the hotel where i had spent many years and Christmas holidays, but it was definitely different from past years The room was extremely humid when we got there, and even keeping the air on 68 and full blast did nothing to alleviate it

Every surface felt damp, including bedding The shower had mold, and the toilet was not securely fastened to the ground so it felt like you were tipping forward when you sat down When I walked around the room even for a short time my feet left black marks in the shower from buildup in the carpet It doesnt seem like the rooms are getting cleaned as much as they should Unfortunately we did have a cockroach on our bathroom sink the last night we were there Other family members stayed here as well and did not have the humidity issue, so that might have just been our room The breakfast was simple but adequate The kids had a fun time in the pool The staff was always very helpful and friendly Great price but this time around it was not worth sacrificing cleanliness

Ron Spyker

The rooms were nice but it doesn’t seem like they are deep cleaning between residents I walked bare-footed in my room just for a little bit and when I stepped into the beautiful white shower in the bathroom, I left black foot prints all over the shower floor In the day and age of COVID, great sanitation is a MUST!Their continental breakfast was okay, but nothing to brag about

Wow! Great experience surrounded by the woods!! Beautiful land!! And lots of sites to visit nearby The owners of the property are very kind and helpful to accommodate your needs Cabins are fully furnished inside and out

Kitchen has everything you need Hot tub, front porch and screened in back porch I love this place!! Set as my favorite on maps because I will come back as much I can!! I usually live in a big city, so I don’t want to forget where this lovely, peaceful land is!!!

Tiffany Bonk

Stayed at Violet’s song cabin, it was nice We did have a few bugs but I guess that’s to be expected with being in the woods Having to sweep and mop wasn’t really what I wanted to do at the end of my vacation

But over all it’s a nice place and the location is about 20 or so minutes from wineries and hiking trails Ferne clyffe state park is right down the street and has really nice, easy walking trails

Trishia Ryser

My husband and I stayed here for a spring break trip with our three teens! It was a perfect quiet get away We hiked Ferne Clyffe State Park which was amazing! You are in the middle of Shawnee National Forest so there are several places to drive (Garden of the Gods etc) within a hour

It happened to be cold on one of the days we were there so we drove to St Louis (2 hours) and visited the Arch and an outlet mall The Troler cabin has a hot tub outside on its deck, which is amazing! It had a washer and dryer which was nice with all the hiking and hot-tubing we did I would go there again for sure!

Amazing cabin!! It is very clean, the owners pay attention to detail I love the information book they’ve put together of local wineries, tourist attractions, parks and also showing the building of the cabin The hot tub is amazing and the hammocks are a great touch for a lazy afternoon of resting

Feather Hills winery is just yards away and is a very nice, smaller & more intimate winery They also have live music on Saturday evening’s, which as a nice touch It is nice with privacy of not having other cabins around you You feel very secluded The only thing is they do not have WiFi, but if you have unlimited data, you’ll be fine The cell phone reception was great I will finish with Ron & Amy were very quick to respond to any email I sent and added a sweet little touch when I reached out to let them know we were celebrating our 16th wedding anniversary!! If you want a nice, quiet, relaxing getaway, I highly recommend Woodland Retreat Cabins!

Marla Blanton

The owners are so thoughtful They have poured their entire beings into their cabin They built it from the ground up

It was a family effort No contractors, they did it themselves and you feel it when you stay there The fire alarm went off and they brought the batteries out that night and spent time talking to me and my family Truly warm and loving people Definitely a must stay place

Lex Hamilton

This cabin has a lot of potential, but needs PROFESSIONAL cleaning and upkeepTo be fair, my husband contacted them when we decided to stay here for our 10th anniversary, and it was a BUST They “apologized,” said maybe their daughter or grandaughter didn’t clean it “that well,” but just excuses and an apology

You need professional cleaning, not a can of Lysol and Windex! You can expect cobwebs, etc on the exterior – we live in a wooded area, we get that However, these are the things we find inexcusable, and have photos of all but the roach we found in the AMWe spent 45 minutes with BOTH of us cleaning (on our anniversary) the kitchen had bugs in the dishes in the cabinets, all over the counter, kitchen sink, hair in the bath sink, hair all over the shower – which just sprays out if the door and is EXTREMELY tiny Layers of dust and spiderwebs everywhere, even the few electric candles that actually worked – FULL of every flying insect and hair imaginable, to include a very large spiderweb by my head with a FULL egg sack in the poorly lit master Huge clumps of hair, brown recluse spiders and dust bunnies in the corners The one bath is FULL of mold and mildew, and there needs to be a FULL DISCLOSURE on the website for people like me with chronic upper respiratory problems – I HAVE BEEN ILL SINCE WE LEFT! The hot tub lights don’t work, we read all the back in 2018 where the lights didn’t work, over a year? It’s not like you can keep the outside light on either as you are dive bombed by bugsWe had to get our own wood, tho we let them know we planned to use the firepit, we BOTH are extremely allergic to poison ivyfunWe tried to sleep in the loft to get away from some of it, but we both just slumped together in a “sink hole” in the mattress, that – and no window covering Couch is very worn out too You can put cute decor up, and write a cute message on a chalkboardbut if a tiny cabin like that isn’t clean? FORGET ABOUT IT, GROSS!!

Was towed here after our Budget Rental Van died on the highway We had our 90 lb lab with us and the management was so helpful and accommodating They event gave us a complimentary late checkout

The room and hotel was very clean and everyone was helpful and pleasant There is a Bob Evans Restaurant in the parking lot which was convenient since we did not have a vehicle I would highly recommend this hotel Thank you to the management for taking good care of us!

Had to make an emergency stay after an accident on the interstate Very friendly clerk who was willing to do what she could to help us out The kickback is a very pleasant way to unwind and was super convenient since we had no transportation to go out and the weather was too nasty to walk

The breakfast is truly a hot breakfast! Freshly prepared eggs, sausage, biscuits, potatoes, oatmeal along with the bagels, yogurt, juice etc We were VERY happy with our stay!

This hotel overbooks! My family and I were driving across country We don’t like to book our hotel stays too far in advance in case plans change and we aren’t able to get as far in a day as we had hoped I start searching for a hotel for the night online a few hours ahead of when we plan to stop for the day

We understand this means our choices may be limited, but we have always been able to find somewhere acceptable to stay for the night Well this time I was having a harder time finding a hotel with availability than normal and had to look farther along our route to find something I finally found this Hampton Inn with rooms available and booked a room online, even though it meant driving much later than we had intended for the nightMy husband, 5 year old son, and I finally arrived after 3AM I woke my son and grabbed our luggage, tired and ready to get some sleep We entered the lobby and were told that they were completely booked and had no rooms I explained that I had a reservation The gentleman at the desk said he did not have a reservation in our name and that there was nothing he could do, the rooms were all taken He continued to tell me that the corporate office runs the online booking and frequently overbooks their rooms! We were left with no where to stay for the night No where else had rooms, I had already tried everywhere else prior to booking here I understand not finding a room is a risk I take when waiting until the day of to book a room, but saying you have a room available, taking my credit card information, sending me a confirmation that my reservation has been secured, then not having a room for me when I get there is NOT acceptable Had I known at the time of booking there would not be a room available I may have been able to find somewhere else, even if it meant taking a different route on our tripI cannot speak to the cleanliness of the rooms or any amenities as I never got a chance to see them, and now I never will I will never again risk booking with Hampton Inn or any other Hilton location now that I know they intentionally overbook their hotels leaving families with nowhere to stayEdited to add: I already reached out to customer support through the website before the management responded to my review I have not gotten a response But honestly, I don’t know how you think you can make it right after you left my family with nowhere to sleep after telling me my reservation would not be honored

Abigail Little

Not sketchy but definitely not a “nice” hotel The staff was too laid back, interactions were unprofessional at best, and public space were under cleaned and under maintained Ants, spiders, bugs, etc EVERYWHERE!! Pool area falling apart, breakfast not well staffed/supplied/cleaned, our window was significantly leaking during a storm, sheets didn’t stay on the bed, etc

Again not the worst place to stay in the Carbondale/Marion area but not great

Jeanie Bond

Just not up to par with other Hamptons I gave it two stars for a comfortable bed & very friendly staff But maintaining this property does not seem to be a priority

Pictured are paint chipping on window edge, and the fridge cabinet Coming in the end entrance there is no light in the foyer So trying to get your key card in the key card gadget in the dark is almost impossible We finally used the light on our cell phone to find out how it works The hallway smells strongly of mold/mildew of which I am highly allergic That scent did NOT follow us into our room, however We will not be returning to this hotel

Where should I start Great place to stay for Grandparents coming to visit Amazing extended stay rooms

Very welcoming even to large families The staff here are on the top of the line trained and the management is off the charts Our family was all around happy Great place with pets as well My American bully loves it here also and is treated just like family Clean rooms nice beds great location So if you are looking for a night stay to hang in a heated pool with friends or a meeting for your company, grandparents , dog lovers , in town workers this is the perfect place in Marion FIVE STARS!!! Almost forgot the breakfast is delicious

Maeve Charles

The hotel was in the middle of a renovation during my stay The rooms are decent sized and the beds are comfortable but the carpet was filthy The continental breakfast was decent with a few hot items, but it was not a full breakfast

The location is convenient and easy to get too off of interstate 57, and there are plenty of good restaurants close by, including ihop,, Culver’s, Logan’s roadhouse and Jimmy John’s, as well as more I would hope that as part of the renovations to the rooms they will be replacing the carpets

Chelsea Bobet

Okay so Shaylynn helped me at the front desk I have NEVER had a receptionist be so considerate and nice I had already gone to 3 hotels that were booked, didn’t have computers, or no pets

Shaylynn helped me out so much!! She went ahead and gave us the last pet room they had available and because of all my issues that night, she even gave me the king suite for the price of a regular room I SO appreciate her She belongs in customer service 10 out of 10 recommend staying here

Everyone we encountered was kind and room was clean and coolOnly bummer with this visit being the pool and hot tub were both drained/closedOtherwise, breakfast was actually really good (fresh) with the usual eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage links

The individual working breakfast was always moving, keeping the area clean, asked if everything was okayAs far as location, it was very easy to access, traffic not bad and within walking distance from a BBQ place or a couple fast food locationsWould visit again if in the area

Oscar Garcia

(Stayed in room 323 for one night)This Fairfield Inn is conveniently located off the interstate This property is well-maintained and clean, which cannot be said about other chains more “upscale ” brands we’ve stayed at The rooms and guest corridors are in need of an update, however, as they are showing their age, and don’t match the renovated lobby and breakfast area, which were renovated prior to COVID, apparently

Aside from that, the front desk agents and breakfast area attendants were all friendly We’d stay here again if our travels bring us through Marion

Terre Lynn

If you are traveling with a dog at this is an excellent place to stay A bit secluded with huge field next door Where they can go off leash Super clean and comfortable with excellent staff

Liquor store within a block and good dining options very closeFresh coffee available at 4 amFor me it doesn’t get any better and I will be back

This was a great stay! The staff was very friendly The room was clean and very comfortable We were thankful for the recliner since my husband’s back started to hurt

Breakfast was very good Eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, waffles plus the regular goodies Big variety Drive past the Baymont and stop at Best Western! They only had a continental breakfast

Samuel Schuweiler

I have to give one positive before the negatives The room was nice sized, we got a king with a sofa pullout Very nice layout

Carpet had crumbs, chewed candy, wrappers and marijuana on floor Sofa pullout was damaged and the stuffing was falling out Sheets on pullout we’re dirty with a red goo, not a stain, but dirty When front desk was advised of the dirty sheets I was told to come get new ones Not cool Also, a sticky mess on carpet just next to bed, looks like cake was smeared into floor Appears to be a worst western and not the Best WesternI’ll edit my review to add my dates stayed and room as I can’t figure how to reply to “the owner” for the reply Stayed 3-21-22 to 3-22-22, room 316

Kristin

NO, just NO! These rooms are in no condition to be offered to anyone We were in room 311 The mattress was the worst I’ve even experienced

It was completely broken down and sunk towards the headboard and middle So uncomfortableThe air conditioner sounded like a lawn mower when it turned on We couldn’t sleep and had to turn it off sleeping in the hot, smelly stale air After not sleeping all night I tried to use the hot tub It wasn’t unlocked even though it should have been open at 8 I walked back to the front desk to get it opened The hot tub was nice though most of the jets aren’t working, but when I tried to leave, they had locked me in! No phone or any way to communicate with the hotel was available in the pool room I had to crawl through the window to get out and walk back to the main entrance in the rain This was my 13th hotel stay while traveling the past two months and was by far the WORST hotel experience so far*Added a photo to show the 6″ dip in the center of our rooms mattress
