We stayed here for 5 days and loved every minute of it This hotel matched the description online perfectly, the grounds are stunning, and the staff is excellent Check in took <5 minutes and that included talking with staff about where best to visit in Hilo

We stayed in a corner lanai room with panoramic ocean views Our room was quiet and any noise we heard was typical hotel noise The room was clean, nice sized, and we had no issue getting more towels and toiletries when we needed them The parking lot is directly across a quiet street (two lane road, average speed 10-15 mph) from the hotel and decently lit at night It is very easy to cross and does have some pot holes at the entrance, but there were not an issue at all We ate at the restaurant once and it was delicious with great service Prior to coming I read a lot of negative reviews on this place and after staying here for almost a week I can confidently say they were all wrong This is definitely up to the Hilton standard and such a steal for the price We can’t wait to return here and beautiful Hilo We will be telling everyone we know to come check out this hotel and Hilo- a hidden gem of the Hawaiian islands!

Chose this venue for my wedding, and it was absolutely beautiful here! The photos came out like a dream I loved staying here and it was a location close to different restaurants and not far from the downtown area The only thing I’d caution on would be that we got charged a little more than we should for the hotel stay, but I called the hotel and they helped clear it up

As for the wedding venue, it really is a beautiful location I do have to say it did take some time and persistence on my part to get certain details finalized while overseas, but the day-of, the staff were super helpful and caring, and for that we are grateful A big thank you to this hotel We will be back again

1) Only difficulty we encountered was finding the hotel on Banyan Road Hotel Sign was very difficult to see due to a very large tree casting a dark shadow, making it hard to read as well as see it during day time hours Suggest to have proper contrast of colors to make hotel name more easily seen and readable from the road

2) Hotel restaurant offered nice vegetarian breakfast and vegetarian pizza selection with wonderful service Staff with big smiles!3) Hotel location is nice secluded area with park as well Coconut Island within walking distance Hotel grounds are well maintained with nice walk pathsOverall very good hotel Congratulations to staff for offering us wonderful experience

We stayed here one or two weeks after the new owner bought this place The new owner is a vacation company, so they help you remotely Because it was during a transitional time, there were some confusion in the communication

The check in didn’t go very smooth However, despite some of the troubles, we loved this place so much! The room was comfortable The patio area is gorgeous The garden is well taken care of Great access to downtown Hilo It’s also located right next to the most popular surfing bay in the Hilo area There is no AC but you can sleep with your window and door open The sound of waves will help you sleep deeply

The reviews on trip advisor are more reflective of recent experiences … they all say just about the same thing I copied and pasted mine belowThis is not your classic bed and breakfast… more like air B and B Based on previous reviews, it seems there was a change in Management recently

They don’t serve breakfast, with Covid as an excuse which I can understand But if you are going to do a prepacked breakfast at least put decent granola bars, yogurt, fresh fruit Everything was the cheapest quality food Their bread looked like one of those packed breads at Walmart The coffee grounds were not good and tasted like the cheapest coffee from Walmart … which in hawaii I would expect only amazing kona coffee If I worked at a bed and breakfast, and had to do prepacked meals I would at least make overnight oats or something that seems more homemade! Breakfast was very disappointing and not appetizing They also did not refill the eggs my husband ate our second nightsThere was an odd stench in our kitchen like as if food was stuck in cracks Also food from the previous tenets was left in the sinkThere was hair in bathroom from previous tenetsSome fruit fliesParking lot was a little difficult to fit inOnly pro was the ocean view and sunrisesI wish we could have stayed when the old owners were there

The B&B owners Maria and Ricardo are fantastic They made us feel welcome and comfortable Our room, the Pele suite, was exactly the way it looked in the pictures online

The view of the water was awesome! Very comfortable bed We loved the food served at breakfast Each morning, Maria and Ricardo would make sure we’re pointed in the right direction with suggestions of things to do and the best way to get to things My wife and I highly recommend staying here!

Breakfast was absolutely can’t-miss (we almost skipped it to get away early to the Volcano park, but I’m glad we didn’t!) Stay here, go see some lava, go to the Volcano Park, and enjoy! We will be back!

If you are looking for a volcanic tropical island adventure while having comfortable but not expensive accommodations – Lava Tree Tropic Inn is a good choiceThe place is authentic The bidirectional one-lane road to it that was built through a tropical forest to evacuate people during the 2018 volcanic eruption feels like a Tarzan habitat

The house is located in the center of a plantation with Macadamia and Avocado trees, oranges, exotic tropical flowers and tracks of wild animals (the wild boar being the largest of them)The place is comfortable Our room was spacious and clean, with a separate bathroom (towels, shampoo, soap provided) on the same second floorOur sleep was not interrupted (no problems from any domestic or wild animals)The place also feels very friendly thanks to its wonderful host – IreneYou can trust Irene’s recommendations on the best restaurants in the nearby Pahoa and Hilo and on scenic locations to seeThanks, Irene, for your hospitality!

Lava Tree Tropic Inn is the authentic Big Island Hawaiian experience It is the perfect place if you want to disconnect and soak up nature and rejuvenate Irene is a lovely woman who owns the bed and breakfast, preparing locally sourced breakfasts, including avocados, fruits, eggs from chickens on the premise, macadamia nuts, jam, juice, etc

The bed and breakfast itself reminded us of Jurassic Park in that the entry is gated with lush tropical vegetation all around Extraordinarily, the 2018 eruption saw lava flows just a few hundred meters from the bed and breakfast The location itself is situated close enough to Pahoa & Hilo and the volcanoes for easy explorations We stayed here for 8 days and managed to explore most of the island by car Lastly, Lava Tree Tropic Inn is much more affordable than most anywhere else Highly recommended!

A tropical paradise This B&B is in a large garden, surrounded by acres of Macadamia, Avocado, and plenty of other trees and flowers The owner Irene served us nuts and fruits from her own trees for breakfast, and was very friendly and hospitable and knows a lot about the islands and surrounding sights

It felt like staying with good friends (if your friends owned the coolest house in the middle of a state park) We will definitely be back

We were greeted by our host on arrival He walked us through the property with the various fruit trees to which we could help ourselves We stayed twice at this property and both of the rooms were very comfortable and clean

Lory provided delicious homemade breakfast (scones, muffins, banana bread, fresh fruits, smoothie, etc) to start off on our adventure every morningWe will definitely stay again when we go back to Hilo!

Karina Kisselite

Really enjoyed the breakfast – great baked items, fruits, smoothie, boiled egg Also was nice to chat with other guests during the breakfast on the terrace The yard was quite nice as well

The place is around 5 min drive to the city, we were able catch Ubers every time What was a bit inconvenient is that toilet was not super separate from the room, so you could hear everything Plus we could hear snoring of someone in the room nearby during the night

Chelsea Lee

The best place to stay on the rainy side of the Big Island Handmade breakfast and fruit right from their orchard on the property Beautiful bedrooms, and luxurious lush grounds to walk around

Right next to waterfalls and right above downtown and all of the beaches Hands down, the best experience you will have in Hilo town Family owned and run

Great B&B Me and my wife stayed in November of 2016 Spent a few days on the other side of the island and a few days here

Steve was a great host, very informative (lived in Hawaii since the 70s) Breakfast was delicious An assortment of fruit, baked goods, – and fresh waffles one of the daysAt breakfast we picked his brain about good places to sight see, what to bring along, and what to avoid He also let us borrow water shoes and had snorkel gear we could use (we brought our own)Would highly recommend

Steve Mick

Extended stay, 4 nights, in August 2018 Exceptionally clean and comfortable, updated suite (wifi, cable TV) Owner was away; the staff was capable and kind

Delicious fruit and bread breakfast each morningHilo is a quiet locale, there are nice dining options available, and the people are exceptionally friendly But, this is not like the busier Kona Coast destination If you want to experience beautiful tropical scenery, like outdoor activity; and/or are looking for serenity, Hilo is a great place to visit

In Transit

LOVELY Nice

ALOHA feelingsAfter we were a little bit disappointed about a B&B in Kailua/Ohau (see seperate review about Sheffield house) we had a smooth touch down in Hilo and the world turned around in a different direction First, we have missed the right Enterprise in Hilo and took the one at the airport and that guy (Justine?) did not send me and my little daughter to the 2 miles far away other Enterprise but upgraded us to a BLUE Ford Mustang convertible! Than we have recognized a different pace and some kind of tranquility which we have missed even in Kailua/Ohau But the best is yet to come From the very first moment entering the Orchid tree we felt home, relaxed and arrived I will not mention for the x time the outstanding breakfast or the very much en detail taste Steve has put into the Koi Suite and the garden and I will not mention again the perfect balance Steve´s between giving room for your privacy and being there when his knowledge or help is needed, when he needs to be your perfect host No boy, you gotta find out on your own and I am sure you will not be dissapointed Let my have a few words about the place/geo Hilo is worth spending 3-4 days We have loved the Botanical Garden ( the one closer to Orchid tree, please try to avoid going to the other one) The rainbow falls close to Hilo downtown Kens HOP is worth going out there and, and, and

This was one of the worst hotel experiences I ever had First, they tell you at check in to leave dirty towels and trash in plastic bags out in the hallway Staff was not to go and service rooms because of their Covid protocol

How could leaving soiled laundry and trash in the hallways be any more safe than leaving it in the rooms for pickup? Our bed was never made Shampoo and soap was never replenished We had to go chase people down in the lobby to get simple supplies each day Total inconvenience and to top it off, i was expected to pay the full room rate while i was doing their job Second, the restaurant was extremely overpriced and the quality of the food was worse than a bad fast food joint The rib eye was the worst cut you could get It was dry, fatty and full of gristle The wait staff went through the motions You had to ask for everything from more water to salt and pepper Finally the only upside to our stay was they provided a water bottle and a refill station outside the lobby entrance No other refill stations were available on any of the floors so if you needed to refill your bottle, you had to go to the lobbyI’m sure this is place is better during normal times, but if they have fear over servicing their guests because of Covid, they should close the hotel until they feel safe Until then, expect less than adequate service

Troy Song

Pro:Location and view One of the best view in Hilo bay apart from Hilton besides it Near to coconut island, Japanese garden and Hilo bay

Con:Old AC is struggling to get room cooled down and it’s really loud We ended up keeping the lanai door open through our our stayThey don’t do regular house keeping…due to their Covid policy etc so expect to save your towels/daily use expendables regularly and place your trash bin outside of your room if it’s full and call front desk for anything neededOverall okish experience

Steve Smith

Good size rooms with plenty of space for four guests ,The cafe has great food and the restaurant is really good for a more up market eating experienceThere’s a great grocery store just outside the front door which has everything you need
