What an AMAZING experience! We walked into this beautifully decorated Queen Anne Victorian home and were greeted by Amy, Jeff and their dog Amy showed us around and gave us homemade cookies! Yum! The room was perfect for our needs Breakfast was homemade and they provided a dairy free option! If you are in Kalamazoo and need a place to stay, ditch the hotel and stay here

You will NOT regret it!

The Innkeepers were so kind and personable We had a beautiful room (the original master bedroom), spacious and beautifully furnished The house has been kept in great repair where not upgraded altogether (no small feat)

The breakfast was deliciousWhen we arrived, we discovered we had left a necessary piece of luggage at home (!!?!&$@#%€!!) The Innkeeper wondered if we couldn’t have it overnighted (we could!! Kudos to FedEx – and eldest son!) and helped us with coupons and a recommendation for a nearby brewpub, where we salved our wounds The vacation was saved, and actually started on a high noteIt was like staying with friends Who have a great houseOh, and it’s a good location too

Love this place

such a convenient downtown location, and every room a masterpiece of 19th Century craftsmanship You really have to take the time to sit in every room and take in the artful way all parts fit together The owners Jeff & Amy are a delightful couple and Amy’s breakfasts are incredible We had such fun meeting the other guests Most restful sleep we have had in a long time the bed was so comfortable We will be back for sure!

Thank you Kara for the ‘home away from home’ feeling at a sad time for our family So many ways that all of us enjoyed our stay Your bedding, a very comfortable sofa, seating outside to view the lightning as the storm rolled in and Bill loved the train going by!Thanks again Kara!

Tiffany Weitzer

We had a terrible time at Kara’s Kottages The house was very dark oh and there was no heat She actually told me while I was on the phone with her “Just make a fire, people have been using fire for heat for thousands of years

” Ah yes, make a fire in an unfamiliar place with no carbon monoxide detectors Ridiculous Would not recommend Kara’s Kottages if you enjoy having heat in your accommodations or a friendly and considerate hostAlso, all of the pantry breakfast items she advertised were expired Some by more than 5 years So grossEdit: Once again, it’s the customer’s fault for the thing that went wrong in the house This is a pattern with her, it seems I do want to point out that there was 1 space heater in the house and she made us go pick up another one from another property But it’s not safe to run space heaters at night so that wasn’t a great solution She offered us alternate (and definitely not equal – not big enough and it was a shared building) in the evening after my son went to sleep Very disappointingAnd yes, there was pancake mix, oatmeal, spices, and oil in the pantry that were expired Not sure why I would make that up? Sharing my experience isn’t ‘revenge’ it’s called an honest review

Joe Weitzer

EDIT TO RESPOND TO OWNER’S RESPONSE: 12/1/2020The owner’s response is incorrect in the following respects:1 There were not 5 space heaters There was 1 space heater, and I had to drive to another property of hers to take a second one from another guest before they checked in (so that guest had no space heater)2

The property she offered was not comparable We had booked a place that was separated due to our concerns over COVID, with two bedrooms to sleep in plus a room for our 8 month old She offered us a 1 bedroom apartment with a pullout couch in a building with other people3 We explained the problem to her on Friday at check-in at 330 pm Granted, that’s late to try to fix a problem However, it is her job to make sure equipment is working before guests arrive I don’t care what Kara does at her own home if she wants to freeze, but if she’s having guests pay over $300/night, she needs to be willing to take bad reviews without lying about her roleOdds are your stay will be fine at Kara’s Cottages but if there is a problem you can be very sure that she will refuse to take responsibility, and even blame you (her paying guest/customer) I think the owner genuinely believes she’s doing her best, which makes it all the more frustrating, because you just can’t reason with people like thisEND EDITORIGINAL REVIEW BELOWWe stayed at a different address for a wedding, but it was run by Kara’s Kottages Upon arrival the furnace wasn’t working, so we spent a couple hours on the phone trying to get Kara to fix it It was a Friday afternoon but didn’t try to fix until 6pm, when we needed to put our son to bed (he’s a baby) There was a frost warning and the house was at 52 degrees which is too cold for a baby Kara told us to keep an old space heater in his room (very dangerous to keep space heaters on overnight in a baby’s room) She was pretty dismissive on the phone and it took a few calls to reach her She offered to move us into another apartment of hers but with COVID we booked a house specifically not to share any space The apartment also did not have space for the 5 of us (4 adults and a baby) in the houseThe heat did not end up getting fixed for the 3 nights we were there (she sent a tech over who troubleshooted it the next day), but we only asked for a refund for the one night since it was only cold for one night (I thought this was a reasonable compromise since it was very uncomfortable) She copied her lawyer and offered us $75 on a $300 room, which was pretty insulting and combativeWe took the $75 because we saw on prior bad reviews that she responds very defensively and tries to litigate against reviewers instead of solving problems (there is a great one where she blames another guest for not liking ants!!!) Overall, the place was fine and it would have been nice if the heat worked, but we spent 2 hours on arrival trying to fix her problem and 4 hours with a heat tech over at our house If she refunded the one night for not providing heat we would have been content but the $75 and copying her lawyer on our complaint is the reason I’m giving a 1 star review Bad business practices I expect this to probably be removed or for Kara to make up some other excuse, but had to get it off my chest after a month of holding in my frustration!!!

We stay here a lot I like that all the rooms have a kitchen even though I don’t think we have ever used it to cook It makes for a more spacious room

It is always clean The beds are super comfy I don’t like that the hot tub is gone The free breakfast is as good as any other free breakfasts It has become pricy lately It would be 4 stars at $140-160 per night but at 200(including taxes) I have to go with 3 stars

Thomas McGray

This hotel has been incredible! We stayed here during our teams run at the USA Hockey National tournament We have stayed at a ton of hotels over the years, and this has been the best by far The staff was incredibly supportive, and the rooms and facilities were very clean

If you are in Kalamazoo, you can’t find a better place!

The service was amazing Breakfast was great and each day was different Location was great to get to all the wineries around

The bed was a bit on the hard side and the walls are thin Luckily our neighbors were quiet but we could hear the people outside the hotel chatting The TV also switches back to the weather channel if you don’t select ok every 30 mins or so

Laurie Simmons

App says like 4 miles from campus It was much further, making it an inconvenient choice for WMU orientation Typical Hampton Inn

Would normally be 4-5 stars But BEDBUGS!! The desk clerks were very helpful, moving my room, calling management, getting confirmation that my stay would be comped However, the general manager on checkout day was short, too busy to talk with me, condescending (as if I didn’t know what kind of bugs I was looking at), requested my pictures (which I had already shown the staff) Days later was charged for the room I reached out and he told me it was just a hold that would fall off, duh I WAS CHARGED I sent him the screen shots as proof and asked to be refunded Then I had to contact corporate who reached out to him and got my refund So yeah, 2 stars

Steve Weir

This place is pretty beat up and kind of gross I’ve stayed at many Hampton inns, this is by far the worst ever, and really damaging to the sparkling reputation that Hampton Inns have in my mind It’s clear that the high ratings must have come a long time ago, and that they have not invested in this place in a long time

The grossest thing were the pitchers placed on top of trash cans and with them a sign saying “no liquids In the trash”, so, instead people fill this gross pitcher with their liquids, and it just sits there There are all kinds of ad hoc signs printed off from a printer and taped to various things, many with poor grammar (and my grammar is Terrible) One sign says that “ice machine broke”, another says that there can be no “acceptations” to this curiously long list of rules posted in the elevator (I think they mean exceptions) It’s not the grammar that bugs me, just the obvious lack of concern about need a sign anyway, or the less than tactful use of the signs Another 4 signs posted in the dining area warn people that they must wear shoes There are signs for nearly everything at this hotel, all of them cheaply made and posted haphazardly with scotch tape Oh well, at least it distracted from the not very clean kitchen and completely beat up furniture

Overall, it was okay There were some issues that I had The biggest one that bothered me the most, was the absence of housekeeping

They refused to do housekeeping on Saturdays because they were short staffed and used that time to turnover rooms of guests that had checked outThe sticking point was my 2 cats The days they said they could clean I was away at work for 12 hours No way was I going to crate them for that long When I gave them a list of the particular day every week I would be off, no one showed up I complained numerous times and never got it resolved The general manager himself was at the front desk on one of those times I just changed out towels at the front desk as neededI understand the whole short staff issue However, I was there for over 2 months, I think there should have been some consideration for that I always tip housekeeping when they clean my room and when I check out This is the first time in a long time where I didn’t I mean for what? They did nothing

Nick E

Our room had a strong smell of cigarette smoke We asked the front desk for another room, but nothing was available at that timeEventually a room became available, but we were not informed of this until we decided to check out at 11PM the same day we arrived

By this time we had already loaded the car to leaveThe front desk did not offer a discount for the hotel’s issue with poor cleanliness and poor communication They did not try to resolve the issue They told me that I’d have to contact their general manager to discuss the situation I sent an email to GM, he followed up with an email and a promise to call to discuss, but he never did All he offered was an apology Poor poor customer serviceI can’t remember a time I had to leave a hotel based on an issue This is a first for me and I travel often for my job

Scottie Heard

I will not be coming back to this hotel During checkin I was forced to give a $50 insidental fee When I told I didn’t want to the lady at the desk said “well you can’t get your room then”

After I went to my room an found out that I was given a handicap room I am not handicap and I feel bad for who ever need it When I walked in the room it smelled like smoke There was a stain on the pillow When I checking out I asked to make sure I was getting the $50 back to my card Another lady told me “yes, but I am surprised that that you got charged 50 because we would charge 100 to 200 and sometimes in cash for insidental” I felt so taken advantage of

Top quality rooms and mattresses Sheets and pillows were fantastic The pool area is AMAZING and if you get a room attached to the pool (atrium) be prepared to endure the sound of fun until the pool area closes around 10 or 1030pm

Staff was fantastic and helpful They were understaffed but I tipped them well as a thank you for sticking it outThe attached restaurant is decent if you don’t want to leave the building for food Kids loved it and that’s my measurement Sadly, the bartender was the waitress and hostess and cashier I’m sure this will change as the pandemic ebbs and flows10/10 would stay again

Bethany Westrick

Staff were warm and inviting at check-in and check out We were one family out of a handful of rooms that had been rented, the hotel was empty We heard no noise in the hallways from other rooms during the night

Our room was clean and tidy The bathtub did not have a plug so I couldn’t bathe my toddler Our room was supposed to have a daybed but had this little couch instead which was nice but wasn’t what we had reserved There were stains on the bed linens, and linens and towels were various shades of white, cream, and orange, see attached photos of towels in room Two towels were supplied, with two hand towels and two washclothsThe pool area and hot tub were very dirty, see pictures There were food wrappers, visible dirt, dirty towels, and huge chunks of peeling hot tub surfacing littered over the deck The pool appeared to be clean but not well serviced Overall, the hot tub needs to be drained and replaced, the patches they made to the hot tub are not holding upAs a note, the restaurant on site is closed Sundays and Mondays so there are no opportunities to purchase meals on siteThere are many other hotel options in the area, I think we would choose another location moving forward

Vincent R Clarke

As I stepped into the property and approached the front desk I was actually impressed as this is such a remote location The attendants at the front desk were very polite and friendly as I expected The public areas seemed to be up to par and lighting in the hallways was good

The property seems to be secure as they lock the main entry and you must use your keycard or buzz to enter I don’t come into places looking for faults but when I entered the room things immediately hit me in my gut Now here’s the good part…1 I reserved a room with 2 queen beds and received a room with a king bed, I decided to keep the room anyway2 The sheets did not fit the bed at all and were old and yellowing, I couldn’t tell if they were white or cream I gave it the go and when I awakened the next morning the “fitted bed sheet had come completely off the corners of the mattress and the mattress cover did the same3 The basin in the bathroom was stopped up, housekeeping came immediately and repaired the issue4 There were several mold/mildew (they look the same to me) on the caulking around the tub5 The lighting in the room was poor, could have been more strategically located6 Window area was very dusty, I could see the dust without my glassesIf not for the above 6 items I could have given a better ratingI expected much better quality

My husband and I applied for a home to buy in this beautiful (and it IS beautiful) park but we’re turned down because of a 5 year old issue Even though our payment record of ALL our bills, had no trouble getting financed for this home, and never even met face-to-face we were still turned down I called the office 5 times and never got a return call until a week later but still no approval

We have always made a place look better than it did after we moved in!! My hobby is decorating All the people we met seemed to like us a lot!! Guess he thought we might be white trash (even if we never saw the mgr) Good luck to all whohave all your duck’s in a row and hope you get a face-to-face meeting!!🍀🍀🍀C and B Grady😄

The room was spacious, but a bit dated The beds were comfortable and we had no problem falling asleep Plenty of pillows that were top grade

Construction in the area made it difficult to get to the hotel, but the location is well suited for the Kalamazoo areaAs we travel, we often find many hotels have staffing issues The Residence Inn is no exception, and is minimally staffed We had no need for service during our stay

Christine Byington

Worse night in years at a hotel Started with not clean bathroom – pee on front of toilet, hair and toothpaste in sink I cleaned it

Then had to get creative to block outside hall light that shined into room because there are no room darkening curtains or blinds in kitchen window Had to call front desk at 11pm to quiet kids running in front of doorway area Then at 2am more shouts, doors slamming etc – called again to be informed it was a large family that checked into the unit above us At 4am called again because it was still a party above us When mentioned at desk, they just said so sorry, and my requested call from manager who isn’t on duty at all on party weekends never came My first warning should have been release that I had to sign saying I would get charged $250 if I party on site, and then the need to walk me to my room to check and make sure it wasn’t smelly from cigarette smoke

Doug Jones

Feels and smells dirty It is old I’m not sure how Marriott has approved this location

2 bedroom units at every other Residence Inn have 2 real bedrooms plus a living room – these units have one room with a bedroom and kitchen, then doors with windows in them for the 2nd bedroom – it is not a a true 2 bedroom like any other Residence Inn Why is it referred to as a “penthouse” on the website???????

It’s a beautiful hotel with lots of amenities The stores, restaurants, and bars on site are really nice The decorations in the hotel are beautiful especially when lit up

They’re in the middle of renovations, but nothing that lessened my stay My biggest issue was with paying $20 extra for parking a night It’s just a pet peeve of mine, parking should always be included in a hotel stay Hotels located downtown, close to many other places, making it convenient The view from the hotel is also nice

Grace Fleming

It was a beautiful hotel, very clean, with wonderful staff and friendly service The valet was always quick and efficient, and we had zero issues Hair dryers, an ironing board and iron, a safe, and small fridge are all located in the room

There was no microwave, which was a bummer but by no means a big deal It was a nice bonus that their ice from the ice machine is the small crushed ice and was delicious Vending machines were definitely pricey, but thats to be expected

Lois Halsted

Wonderful accomodations

Staff professional and friendly Our conference meals were beyond great(loved all the brownies and cookies) Conference rooms were well stocked with water Our room was clean, well stocked with water, coffee, and toiletries(oops! I guess they don’t go together, my bad) Even with the construction going on at the Radisson I did not feel it detracted from our conference Thank you for taking such great care of us while we attended Great Lakes Rotary PETS March 10-13, 2022

I have been a Marriott rewards member for 23 years and I am a Titanium member I usually have about 60-70 stays a year This has been the worst stay ever

I use the mobile app which allows Reward members to bypass the counter and go directly to the room and use the mobile key on my cell to check inI arrived around 9:30 pm and the front staff member Donnjahnik was typing on the computer She saw me walk in the lobby but did not greet me nor acknowledge me but kept typing for another 30 seconds When she looked up there was no greeting but a curt “last name” She then asked me for my license and credit card I told her that the cc isn’t needed when using the mobile app and she replied that it was policy when in fact it is not She then told me that before I could use the mobile app, I needed to have my cc scanned which is a gross deviation from corporate policy In other words, I would need to go through the entire check-in process before I could use my mobile app to check in I told her she was wrong and she said I was rudeShe then told me 3 times I could just leave and go to another hotel and I told her I wasn’t going anywhere Unbelievably she then threatened me 4 times she would check me out and I would need to go to another hotel I finally allowed her to scan my credit card and checked into the roomThere was mold in the shower and the room smelled musty The fan of air conditioner had to run continuously on high to clear the musty smell I attempted to email the office manager but the email was a Gmail account This is very unprofessional for a corporation The email was not replied to I wrote a letter to corporate and I will let you know the reply Bottom line: don’t stay at this hotel

I just stayed at the Fairfield Inn West for 1 week and had a good experience While the elevator wasn’t spotless and the hallways seemed dingy (but not dirty) my room was very clean, the bedding fresh and the bathroom & shower were also clean Because of covid protocols the staff do not enter to clean or deliver fresh towels unless asked, which I actually preferred

The front desk staff were always pleasant, said hello and goodbye when they saw me coming and going The buffet breakfast presented a variety of options My only complaint is the noise level because the walls are thin and my room had a connecting door to an adjoining room, so it provided no soundproofing This is solved by running the room’s fan (and I always bring a white noise sound machine so I can sleep better) There are several fast food restaurants and coffee drive thrus right around the corner, and nearby are plenty of dine-in restaurants I’m overall happy with my experience and if I need to return to the area will stay here again

Savon Davis

Only negative about this hotel is that it needs to be updated such as the bathroom/shower Microwave and refrigerator is provided so that’s a plus! One of the housekeepers named angel provided great customer service gave me what I needed and helped found my lost daughter! Beds are comfortable, breakfast was provided Everything was great

We had a great time staying at this historic landmark Henderson Castle felt like a museum that you could stay at Each room had a theme that looks like a display that you can enjoy

There is a lot of details worth checking out If you get there early enough, you can explore the history The employees were very helpful when we arrived and they were very understanding for any concerns that me or my friends had while staying there The hot tub on the roof was easy to use and exciting for the winter timeWe are considering coming back again either in the fall or some time next year Thank you for a memorable experience

I can not say enough wonderful things about my most recent stay at the Henderson Castle From the moment we had any contact with the staff, every moment was luxurious Julie greeted us warmly at the door and escorted us up to our wonderful room, the “Italian Suite

” The room was beautifully decorated with champagne, roses, rose peddles and chocolate covered strawberries Later that evening we sat in the spirits lounge under the direction of Shawna the most fantastic bar tender I have ever met She truly knows how to make the best chocolate Martini Not only can she make the best drinks but she is also quite the conversationalist engaging all the guests in conversation and truly getting to know them and make them feel right at home Jaquar, the hotel manager was also amazing in making sure our stay was wonderful I can not say enough wonderful things about my stay at this beautiful Historic Inn I hope to be back to visit there very soon This staff and castle Rocks!!!

if you want a little getaway come to The Henderson castle! Stayed in the Dutch room such a beautiful room with a king size bed Hot tub on the roof time so cool and an amazing view of the city of Kalamazoo We did have to wait for the last spa to be over cause the staircase is in the same room

But when the last spa appointment is over then the door is open to go up to the hot tub Opened for a few hours for guests to use so thats fine because we still enjoyed it! It was not the workers fault We had a few drinks at the bar with an amazing ceiling so beautiful and unique So glad we got a little history at the front desk because she is the tour guide so she knew a lot about the castle! Cant wait to come here again! I hope my review helps you guys to stay here!!

We stayed at the inn for 3 nights and were extremely impressed The location is great, and it is super close to K College The rooms were well appointed, clean, and spacious

We were blown away by the service as well, the inn keepers were super friendly, accommodating, and helpful, and the dog (even as someone who doesn’t like dogs too much) was great We also really enjoyed the breakfasts which were all delicious and varied

The Stuart Avenue Inn is a wonderful respite in the historic district within walking distance to downtown Kalamazoo We stayed in two rooms on the top floor for my sister’s wedding and we were amazed by the heartwarming touches, caring service, and delicious breakfasts They even let us take a couple of pictures on the bride in their gorgeous garden (with permission)! This Holiday Inn Express is similar to my other HIE experiences in regards to the facility, I was happy The area seems very safe, the building is nice, and the rooms are decent size The carpet in my room had a weird stain (spill) by the door, but nothing that altered my usage or overall opinion

The staff is what made my stay exceptional Everyone I encountered over 3 days was friendly and accommodating; front desk, room attendants and breakfast service Super nice staff!!I would highly recommend based on the staff alone if in Kalamazoo Michigan

I updated with my room card holder and dates Absolutely AVOID this hotel I’ll start off by saying I woke up to bed bugs

See picture Still reading? Here we go I felt as is I was in section 8 housing Lobby was nice and receptionist was nice, but once I stepped into the elevator I knew my stay was not going to be as nice The elevator looked as if it hadn’t been cleaned in months Carpet is very dirty and stained, dirty finger prints throughout Rooms are dirty and run down Drains don’t drain Carpet stained, my door wiggled badly The ethernet port in my room did not work Numerous cracks in the walls and ceiling I had 1 shower towel, 2 hand towels and no wash rags for a 2 queen bed room After a night of crying babies and a barking puppy (no pets?) From across the hall, then I wake up to find a bed bug under my blankets, I WILL be changing hotel chains Now I have to go work the day in clothes I’m concerned may have beg bugs in Disgusting

I am not impressed at all I don’t require too much from a hotel but this one is not worth the money The service is not good, the hotel is worn down and dirty

The floor in our room has dirt, the tub was brown, the mattress cover on the pull out couch has some stains The pull out couch is extremely uncomfortable The pool was warm which is a positive There is not a hot tub The pool hours are nice though I suggest staying somewhere else

I was super impressed with the style and design of the interior of the hotel Love all the artwork and relaxing modern furniture It was very pleasing to the eyes

The rooms are big, spacious and ideal for a long term stay, although I was only hanging out for two nights Parking was right across the street and had a much need breezeway given the Michigan winter (Parking is $20/day but safer than leaving your car on the snowy streets) The rooms are comfortable and quiet for the most part Someone had a dog on my floor and it was barking early and non stop I called the front desk twice and it eventually stopped Not the the first thing you want to hear in the morning when your trying to relax Couple of areas for improvement, there was no shampoo, conditioner or lotion in the bathroom Essentials when your traveling by plane, because you can bring those on your carry-on Also the breakfast provided by the hotel is supposed to end at 10am on the weekends, I went down at 9:40 and almost everything was gone, not eaten but removed by the staff Extremely disappointed

Home2 suites by Hilton is a good quality hotel for downtown Kalamazoo My family of four were comfortable in a king bedroom suite We enjoyed the separate space with a pull out couch, TV, bathroom, kitchenette in one room with door closure and king bed TV and closet in the other room

Room was clean and well stocked with towels, kitchen needs, coffee The best part was the separate heating and cooling per each side of the room*Internet was fine in room, but logged you out every time you step out of room*Breakfast was grab and go, well stocked and cleaned, waffle maker has huge lines Hot breakfast is served at the garden hotel connected*Gym looked big with lots of options*Pool is small, no hot tub (kids had fun)*Parking is in gated garage across from the garden hotelI was surprised to find out that they gave vouchers and that they give you as many as you need for in and outOverall the hotel was great and I would certainly stay again Only disappointment was Kalamazoo as a city, there were lots of homeless in the playground a block from hotel, and over memorial day weekend almost everything was shut down Many restaurants did not open until 3pm and some such as Jimmy John’s were straight up closed

Definitely download the app It allows you to check in on your phone, and pick your room The app also gives you the ability to have a room key without a physical key, as well as control the temp, and tv

It’s great place to stay If you’re checking into Home2, you can enter in the Hilton entrance, just go past the desk and keep walking Also, downtown is very walkable so you can park and stay The hotel charges 20 a night for the garage, but they give in and out access If you don’t plan on going in and out, it’s cheaper to pay the garage directly
